About Insulated Panels and your Timber frame: Insulated panels(also referred to as SIPS) are the
preferred method for enclosing modern timber frames. Insulated panels are a manufactured insulation system that
provides many benefits to both builders and homeowners. The design concept of an insulated panel is quite simple,a
rigid foam core sheet with high insulative value sandwiched between two layers of substrate; an exterior(Oriented
strand board) and an interior(usually drywall). These panels which envelop the entire frame create a fast, highly
insulated system with very few thermal breaks that leave the beauty of the frame completely exposed to the occupant.
Benefits of Panel system:
- Easy to finish: The OSB exterior surface provides a continuous nail and screw base to which exterior trim and siding can be
attached. The interior drywall need only be taped at the seams and painted.
- Easy to wire: Built in electrical chases in the panels make wiring exterior walls an easy task.
- Window and door openings are pre cut into the panels making installation of these fast and easy.
- Energy savings: By virtue of high R-values in foam and air tight installation of panels energy savings of 30-50% over
conventional construction are not uncommon.
